Paper Dolls Polka Theatre

Disclaimer: we were sent press review tickets that the lovely Anna and her children reviewed for us!

As mentioned (many times before), we are great fans of the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon. The Polka Theatre is currently undergoing major revenoations (so exciting) so in the meantime has one show running at the New Wimbledon Theatre Studios, as well as running theatre programs with schools throughout Merton.

My kids have been going to Polka Theatre productions since they were very little – the Polka Theatre really does cater for all ages groups from toddler sthrough to early teens. With classics such as Charlotte’s Web and the Ice Queen to more modern productions such as Charlie & Lola (though by now, they may also be perceived as classics!).

As the renovations are underway, this year’s Christmas/ Winter production is hosted at the New Wimbledon Theatre and is a stag adapation of Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson. My kids love the Paper Doll’s story book – which of course lends itself to a delightful crafing session (which you can then expand into some of these fabulous Gingerbread Men Pop Up Cards). So I knew this would be an amazing production to go and see.

We sent Anna and her two kids to see the show (as we already had tickets to go and see the panto!). Here is what they thought!

Paper Dolls Production at the New Wimbledon Theatre

Paper Dolls is a fantastic production. The staging is incredibly clever so that there is always something to look at, even as there are transitions between scenes. Everyone can see but there were special beanbags at the front of all the seats for any children who wanted to be closer.

There were interactive elements to the show too, all of which kept all the children enthralled for the entire duration.

At 45 minutes, the time flew by!

My seven year old appeared engrossed and spent the journey home reading the book itself, which we bought in the theatre, at the end.

My 4 year old daughter however, was utterly mesmerised, insisted on making her own paper dolls on our return home and when asked how many points she would give it out of ten, she replied immediately, “All the points mummy!”

Could not recommend this highly enough!
