Babies Don’t Keep Poem.
|This poem is simply perfect (and explains the state of my house!).
Babies Don’t Keep
by Ruth Hulburt Hamilton
Mother, O Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing, make up the bed,
Sew on a button and butter the bread.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.
Oh, I’ve grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue,
Lullabye, rockabye, lullabye loo.
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo
The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew
And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo
But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo
Look! Aren’t his eyes the most wonderful hue?
Lullabye, rockaby lullabye loo.
The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
But children grow up as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs; Dust go to sleep!
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.
What a fantastic poem – I love it. I never heard it before but it totally sums up my style of mothering. We like to have lots of fun and messy play in our house and it shows! but I wouldn’t want it any other way 🙂
I love this poem – it’s very wise – as is anything which encourages doing less housework!
Yes.. and it so justifies why I don’t hoover……… 🙂
what a great poem! what about the final verse where the OH comes home and asks what has been going on, the washing’s not done and where is his tea? Only joking – mine isn’t really like that!!!!
Ha! You had me there.. I was convinced I missed a verse off!!! But that should be added, shouldn’t it?! With a suitable “do it yourself” response!
Wonderful and so very true!! X
Now to persuade our other halves!!
