Cooking with Kids: Pea & Bacon Tart

As you know, we do try and get the kids involved in the kitchen – even if they are just watching and I am discussing with them “how you cook something” (The Boy, now knows how to make mash, but needs practice in peeling potatoes). Today, I share with you our Pea & Bacon Tart – it is very similar to our quiche recipe and shows how versatile, the quiche recipe is!

This is great for young children, as you can cut the bacon or ham with scissors or just fry some croutons – i.e. does not involve the need of handling a knife for a 4yrs old child!

pea and bacon tart

Ingredients:

Pastry – check out our homemade shortcrust pastry recipe or use ready made:

200g plain flour. 100g room temperature butter, 2 tbl spoons of water, salt to taste

Though The Boy loves making pastry, as he can really get stuck in – a great exercise in getting those finger muscles working!

Filling

  • A bowl of frozen peas
  • Optional: you can add half a fried onion too – but my kids don’t like them (at the moment), so we leave them out
  • Two handfuls of bacon pieces/ lardons or – we used left over Sunday Ham, fried
  • 2 Eggs
  • 150-200ml of milk
  • Handful of grated cheese
Pre heat the oven at 180C

1) Make your pastry, by adding all your ingredients into a bowl and mixing/ kneading until you have a smooth dough (add water last). Wrap and put in the fridge whilst you prepare the filling

2) Fry your bacon/ pieces of ham/ lardons

3) Beat your eggs with the milk, then grate in a little cheese

4) Get your pastry, roll it out and put into your tart dish.

5) Add your (frozen) peas, bacon and pour over the egg/ milk mixture – if your tart looks little “empty”, add handful more peas

6) Place in the oven for 40min or so

Enjoy!

This freezes well too.
