Presents Kids can Make: Cookies & Ornaments
|I say “presents kids can make”, these actually make lovely presents that “adults can make” too. The idea is that you get “Christmas Baking”, making any yummy traditional Christams cookie recipe that you love to make.
Wrap them nicely, add a little Homemade Ornament as a decoration and you have a wonderful Christmas kids, that either kids can make or you can. Basically, you can be as adventurous or simple with your recipes as you want to be. It is up to you really. There are some amazing Star Ornament Crafts here to browse.
TOP TIP: In Austria, we like to make 6-8 different cookie types and that makes the gift bags really sweet. But I also think they look great with just one type of biscuit. SHOULD you go for more than biscuit – then I suggest that you store each type of biscuit in a separate cookie tin, until you are ready to wrap them and give them. I find that if you have the same biscuits in the same tin/ or gift bag, the flavour mix and each individual sort is no longer as good.
Today, I share with you a simple Viennes Biscuit recipe
Ingredients:
- 175g unsalted softened butter
- 40g icing sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla essence
- 175g plain flour
- 40g cornflour
Filling:
- 100g plain chocolate – ideally 70%
- 50ml single cream
- (same as for our Chocolate Hazelnut cake)
Method:
- Mix your butter and icing sugar.
- Add the vanilla essence.
- Gradually mix in the flour and corn flour
- You should have a “quite wet” dough now.
- Using 2 teaspoons, make little heaps of dough. I managed to get 34 heaps (= 17 cookies), and think I could have made mine slightly smaller and gone for 36 or 38 even.
- Once you have made all your heaps. Pick each up and gently roll it to make a smooth surface. You don’t have to, but your finished cookie will look just that little bit more sophisticated.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12-14min – until the edges start turning a golden brown.
- Remove. Let cool briefly and then gently transfer them to the cooling rack to fully cool.
Filling:
- Melt your chocolate over low heat in a pan, slowly add the single cream.
- When it is all fully dissolved, place in the fridge and let it thicken a little (you don’t want it “running away”.
- Then with a knife or spoon spread on the bottom of one cookie and stick together with a second. Once all are finished, place in the fridge to let them set fully!
Linzer Augen(just delicious and so pretty, especially if you stamp hearts into the middle)
Husaren Krampfen (great for small hands to help form balls and make dips)
Vanilla Kipferl (I always have to make double portions)
Then wrap in a cellophane bag. Add a ribbon and your homemade ornament! If you need Christmas Ornament ideas, look no further and click on the link!
We love these as gifts, as they are made with care and love, they beat Christmas commercialism and get the kids creative and baking! The kids could also have a go at making some fabulous Christmas Bookmark Corners or DIY Angel Ornaments! What are your favourite presents that kids can make?
Fancy a movie to go with your cookies this Christmas?
