Winter Family Getaways

Winter is upon us, the colder weather has swept in and we’re already looking ahead to our summer vacations, but why wait? You may not be escaping the cold but a change of scenery can sometimes do the family some good!
I’ve put together my list of some of the best places in the UK you can head to around the winter months for the perfect family getaway.
Manchester
The capital of British music, Manchester is a great place to head for a weekend away. There’s all sorts including their infamous Christmas markets that are a particular highlight. If you have any football fans you can head to the National Football Museum or take in a game of football at one of the cities number of teams. There’s loads of shops, including the Arndale Centre where you could quite literally get all your shopping done in one go! Get in touch with the Airbnb customer services team if you’re looking for affordable accommodation.
Lake District
The Lake District is one of the most stunning locations in the UK and with a frosted glint it’s particularly pretty at this time of year. There’s some great museums including the old home of Beatrix Potter or you can take a walk around one of the many lakes. A particular highlight is Lake Windermere which is great if you have any pets as you can bring them along for the fun!
Chester
One of the most historic towns in the UK, Chester has some amazing markets and also a great shopping scene for all those last minute buyers. Founded as a Roman Fortress in 1AD, you can take a walk around the Roman walls to get a real sense of the history of the place. Combine your Christmas shopping with a trip back in history and consider Chester for a day out, it truly is a stunning place.
Edinburgh
Take a trip further North to the beautiful city of Edinburgh. Take the family up to Arthur’s Seat for a short hike, a great way to take in the incredible views and to get your kids out in the countryside. If you prefer sticking to the city you can wander round the streets and take in Edinburgh Castle, a spectacular fortress with views across the city. If you want to learn more about Scotland, head to the National Museum of Scotland to learn all about the countries past.
These are some of my top picks for places you should head with your family this winter. There’s loads more around the country, do some research and don’t let the weather stop you having loads of fun with your family! If you have any suggestions feel free to comment them below, I’d be interested in hearing from you as I’m always looking for new ideas!
I wrote a post about summer days out if you’re looking to plan ahead for next year. Thos particular article looks at Blenheim Palace, a stately home situated in Woodstock. There’s nothing wrong with planning ahead!
